Hollow glass microspheres, made of Soda Lime Borosilicate Glass, are hollow spheres which grain size is 10-250microns, wall-thickness 1-2 microns, filled with inert air or gas. They are produced at the high temperature of 700-800 degrees Celsius through complicated chemical and physical transformation. Hollow glass microspheres are white and the specific gravity of them is about 0.25-0.60g/cc. Someone is moving its glass microspheres into greenhouse films for the agricultural market.
Using microspheres can allow producers to make more amounts of low density and linear low density film with the same amount of resin, application development engineer Fernando Cervantes said at Plastimagen 2016 in Mexico City.
Microspheres also can provide whiteness to films, allowing for the replacement of titanium dioxide, he added. The materials also can spread light over a greater area, which helps plant growth.
Development of microsphere films began last year in the U.S. St, Paul, Minn.-based they now is working with film producers on the new application.
In Mexico, they have operated an innovation center in San Luis Potosi since 2013. Overall, they have done business in Mexico since 1947 and employs a total of 7,000 there.

Adjusting product density
The density of hollow glass microspheres is usually 0.20 ~ 0.60g/cm3, and the density of mineral filler is generally around 2.7 ~ 4.4 g/cm3 (The data adopted is the true particle density). In order to obtain the equal size, 14 kilograms or more of talc must be used to obtain the same effect of 1 kg of hollow glass microsphere. Hence the desired ideal density can be obtained by adding appropriate proportions of hollow glass microspheres.
